Heralded as “a masterful soloist instilling lines with bite, subtlety and bracing virtuosity,” Grammy-nominated flutist Joshua Smith enjoys a multifaceted career as a leading soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and teacher. Mr. Smith first came to national attention at the age of 20 when he was appointed principal flute of The Cleveland Orchestra. Intrigued with exploring new ways of connecting with audiences, he recently spearheaded the release of a double vinyl classical chamber music LP, recorded in a local tavern.
The Cleveland Orchestra embarked on its 14th international concert tour under the direction of music director Franz Welser-Möst in September 2014, performing thirteen concerts in seven cities between September 7 and 22.
The tour included six performances of Jörg Widmann’s flute concerto “Flûte en suite,” with Cleveland’s principal flute Joshua Smith, who premiered the concerto in 2011.
Mr. Smith made his BBC Proms debut with the UK premiere of “Flûte en suite,” which was telecast live on BBC Four on September 7th.
